Blue Rock Construction have been contracted by Linc Cymru to carry out the demolition works ar Dyffryn School in Port Talbot.
Blue Rock held a meeting at the site at 2pm on Wednesday 24th April.
This meeting was arranged voluntarily by Blue Rock themselves as they took the view that local residents had concerns about the plans for the school and wished to be transparent about their role.
The purpose of the meeting was to give information to anyone concerned regarding Blue Rock’s involvement with the development and works to be carried out by them.
8 or 9 residents turned up to the meeting as well as two local councillors.
Concerns were raised about parking, drainage/flooding issues, environmental issues, and health and safety issues.
Parking:
Blue Rock workers have been allocated parking space ‘on site’ so there should be no Blue Rock disruption to residents parking.
Drainage/Flooding:
Residents made Blue Rock aware of the ongoing drainage/flooding issues around the Broad Street and York Place junction. A comment was made that demolition work would have an effect on the drainage below the school and connecting pipework and could cause increased flooding issues.
This was acknowledged by Blue Rock and they agreed to monitor this.
Environmental:
The site has various trees and there is a clause in the contract to protect bat’s habitats.
Blue Rock stated that the trees would not be touched by them.
This issue needs to be addressed to Linc Cymru.
Health and Safety:
A resident noted that tiles had fallen from a roof onto a pavement that may have been due to vibration caused by Blue Rock equipment. This raised a concern for people’s welfare while walking the pavement, especially as there are children walking to school every working day as well as weekend foot traffic.
The councillors present said they would contact the relevant authorities to see what is being done to mitigate this risk.
In the meantime Blue Rock are aware that should they operate machinery that could cause tiles and debris to fall onto the pavements before the issue is sorted they would become liable now that they have been informed.
The Blue Rock representatives listened and responded to all concerns.
There will be weekly meetings held on a Wednesday afternoon between 2 and 4pm to keep residents updated on developments.
